FYI 4 Gen X
Somewhere between Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerburg, there's Generation X; young enough to be interested in the latest technology fads but old enough to be banned from Instagram by our kids. Gen Y and Gen Z think they own cyber space but I'm one Gen-X-Girl who wants a piece of it! This blog aims to share info about the latest (or not so late) technology, websites and miscellaneous items to make our lives more savvy, hip and fun. And, to make our kids lives just that little bit more...awkward!

Jamie's World
You Tube has made stars out of several youngsters including Justine Beiber and Beyonce's dancers Le Twins. It's also made a star out of Jamie from Napier New Zealand with her quirky sense of humour and short comical videos that she posts on You Tube and Facebook. She has millions of followers from around the globe and is reportedly in You Tubes top percentage of earners.
Mike Chung's blog has a great article about her that your can read here http://www.thebigidea.co.nz/news/blogs/strange-news/134157-jamies-world. She is popular amongst her generation and even a Gen X Girl like me clicks on her videos from time to time (yes I have liked her page). She pokes fun mostly at herself and at the little things that could occur in any person's life. Your teenage kids are most likely fans and may look at you sideways when they see you laughing at Jamie.
It's amazing what she has achieved in a short period of time and no doubt, she may go on to become her generation's Tina Fey.

fiverr.com
I stumbled across this site when I was putting my first ebook together. It's an online marketplace where a buyer purchases 'gigs' for $5. It's the go to place for anything you want done. I had someone in America create an ebook cover and another person proofread 8000 words. They did a fantastic job and were so cheap. Apparently they do it because they love what they do and the money is a bonus!
You can get just about anything done on there. Would you like a poem read with an Italian accent or maybe you want 30 seconds of original music. Or perhaps you would like an app built? You can find it all on fiverr.com. Of course not everything is $5 as they do have gig upgrades. Take the original music for example, 30 seconds will cost you $5 then each 30 seconds after that may cost you another $5.
The other cool thing is that you can sell your services on fiverr. How about drawing caricatures or saying jokes for $5? Or maybe you are a great writer and are willing to write cover letters for $5. I'm not sure how much money you would end up making per hour, but there seem to be a lot of 'top-rated sellers' doing a roaring trade on there.
Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiverr for more background information or go to http://www.fiverr.com/ to check out the site.
Indie publishing
Have you ever secretly wanted to be an author? Maybe you write great poetry or even rap lyrics? Ever since my Year 6 teacher told me I was a great writer I have dreamed of publishing a book. As a young girl I loved the Nancy Drew mystery series and, as a teenager I would watch Jessica Fletcher
on TV's Murder She Wrote (and even nowadays on rerun) solve the hundreds of murders that crossed her path and I entertained the idea of becoming a mystery writer. However, as I grew up, hard cash needed to be earned, nappies needed to be changed and the dream of writing a best seller slowly slipped away.
Then JK Rowling and Stephanie Myer, two Gen X superstars, showed us author wannabes what can be done and I decided that I would try my hand at writing again. After picking a topic that interested me (no not mysteries but non-fiction biographies), I decided to try out the world of Indie publishing.
Indie publishing stands for independent publishing and it's simply the author publishing their work themselves. There is still a lot of work publishing in this manner as the author must write, edit, publish, market and manage the sales process. Many more posts will be needed to explain this further, however, today's post is about an online publishing site that can help an author publish their work as an ebook.
After writing your book, you head to a self publishing website such as Smashwords, LuLu or Amazon. I used Smashwords to publish my book Shark Tank Bios and found it a concise and fairly straight forward site to use. The founder, Mark Cocker, has a free how to guide book that you follow in order to format your book correctly and get it loaded in the right place. Smashwords has a special 'grinder' that they put your writing through (in cyber space that it is) and it checks that the layout is correct, there aren't too many spaces and other important layout and setting issues. This is really important because how your work looks on word can be completely different from how it looks on a device. And again, it can look different on an ipad and a kindle. The grinder helps to sort out issues so that your final product is at its best.
Smashwords will send your ebook to various bookstores like Apple and Barnes and Noble and readers can purchase it from there! One big problem is Amazon don't take their ebooks so you have to load your book onto Amazon directly. I haven't figured out how to do this yet, but I will as it is really important to get onto Amazon as it is the biggest online book and product store there is.
So now there is no excuse not to write that best seller you have been sitting on! Or even just to write books for your kids to read. I must say that it is pretty exciting when you see your book on the stores' bookshelves. I figure if only my family and friends buy my book then I will still be happy!
